Lately I’ve been starting off my day with a green smoothie. The “recipe” is very simple and this protein packed drink really kicks starts my energy levels. Although I am not a vegan or vegetarian, I am often asked how I meet my protein needs because as far as meat goes I only eat fish and call myself a “pescatarian.” I tell folks all the time that changing my diet to eat this way well over 20 years ago actually increased my intake of protein. Before I removed most meats from my diet, I actually was anemic (iron deficient), it was so bad in fact that I had to take supplements and be monitored by a doctor! When my diet changed, I no longer struggled with being sluggish, tired and worn out because of the lack of iron. Surprising, right? But did you know that kale and spinach are actually 49% and 45% protein?!!! Brocolli is 45% protein too! (source: TheGiveProject) Check out my video as I make one of these smoothies in my Vitamix -
So, starting my days with green smoothies provides me with the energy I need to tackle the day. If you want to get on the high protein shake train, I suggest starting your day with a green smoothie too!
Green Smoothie
Ingredients
3 cups of kale or spinach
1/4 cup almond and coconut milk (I like this mix it is new)
1/2 mango
1/2 banana
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 scoop protein powder (optional)
4 ice cubes
Method:
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend to desired consistency. Drink! All of the fruits used can be substituted for your favorites. If I don’t have mango I use nectarines but really any fruit will do.

I love green smoothies. I have them several times a week and can honestly say they do wonders for the body. Same as you I most often eat fish. Other meats are present in my diet maybe once a month and that has helped greatly with my weight loss.
Can’t wait to try your green smoothie
