Marathon training run 9.13

Sweaty me after a 6 mile run this week

It is hard to believe that the Marine Corps Marathon is just 6 weeks away. SIX!!! I can tell you right now that I have a wee bit of trepidation about the entire thing. I haven’t had a GREAT long training run yet. If you remember, last weekend both of my calves cramped up in mile 10 but I trudged on to finish a little over 15 miles. The week prior I did 14 miles and that was more walking than running. But this week, I am determined to feel WONDERFUL after my 18 miles. I think I’ll try out Jeff Galloway’s run/walk method and do 3:1 intervals – 3 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking. Around the half-way mark if I feel good I will probably go ahead and run.

To prevent cramping I am drinking water like a mad woman, with the intention of drinking a gallon today. I am already at 64 ounces, just 64 more to go! I think that being well hydrated will keep the cramps at bay. When I ran yesterday my calves protested but I kept on going However, I slipped a bit with paleo and did have a drink or two Ahem the night before so being slightly dehydrated was probably the culprit.

vodka martini

My vodka martini wets my whistle but does nothing for hydration!

I am excited about running my 18 miles; I think it will provide me with a well needed confidence boost during my training. I have heard from friends that if you can do 18, you can do 26.2. I’d like to believe that so I am determined to put myself to the test tomorrow.  And on Sunday my recovery run will be the Black Girls Run! Drive to End Hunger 10k. Yes, it is a race. NO I will not be racing. RECOVERY!

I’ll be sure to let you know how everything goes!
